How to Use the Perfect PFE & Elise for Incontinence Relief

Incontinence is one of those things we never want to talk about, but the fact is, it can happen to anyone! Incontinence is a lack of voluntary control over urination or defecation. It can happen when you laugh or sneeze and you might have a little leak, or you might have to run to the bathroom because your body is telling you that “you have to go right now!” These are symptoms of incontinence. If you have concerns, you should speak to your doctor.

If you’re wearing a pad to contain the leaks and you’re having to modify your behaviour, it may be worth considering other options.

One of the things that can cause incontinence is a weak pelvic floor.

We all know our Kegels are important, but how many of us know how to do them properly? Or your pelvic floor might be so weak that you can’t actually do a proper contraction and relaxation to make your pelvic floor stronger. This is where a pelvic floor exerciser comes in.

TENSCare makes two separate pelvic floor exercisers: the Perfect PFE and the Elise. Each device has the same programs built in, but they each work a bit differently.

The Perfect PFE:

This device is battery operated, so it has two AA batteries in the back. How it works, is you connect the lead, and it comes with a probe that you insert into your vagina. You may want to put a little bit of lubrication on it to makes this easier. Then, you simply slide it into your vagina just like a tampon. The long outer probe will tell you if it’s moving in the right direction. When it contracts, it should tip back. There’s a little shelf here will prevent it from going in too far. So, simply connect the lead to your device by these little pins, insert this into your vagina, put your feet up, turn the machine on and relax for about 20 minutes.

Once the probe is inserted, simply choose the program that fits you. Use the arrow button to find a comfortable milliamperage. It will start to tingle, and you’ll start to feel the contractions. When you feel the contraction, if you want to go up a little bit more, you can by pressing the up arrow. You shouldn’t feel any pain, but you should feel the contraction.

The Elise:

The Elise works in a similar fashion to the Perfect PFE, but it has a different probe. The Elise also has a rechargeable battery. The Elise has three programs stress, urge, and mixed. To get started, simply plug in your probe. The probe on the Elise is slightly different in shape, but it works in the same way. Just as with the Perfect PFEC, you will want to put your lubrication on the contact points and insert the probe into your vagina. When you’re comfortable, press and hold the power button until it comes on. You’ll hear it beep when it’s ready. Next, choose your program, whether you want to use the stress program, the urge program, or the mixed program. Push the plus button until you can feel the contraction. Press the plus button again to go up one or two, but remember it should not hurt. You should just feel the contraction, and then just simply let the machine do its thing!

Settings:

Stress: If you have leakage when you sneeze or cough, you have stress incontinence and should use the Stress program. Urge: If you find that you have to run to the bathroom quickly, that’s called Urge incontinence. You will want to use the Urge program. Mixed: If you’re not sure or think you have a combination of stress and urge incontinence, you can use the Mixed program. Pain: The Perfect PFE also has a program for pain, so if you have pelvic floor pain, it can soothe the nerves in your vaginal area and take away some of that pain. (Only on the Perfect PFE)

How To Use Your Perfect PFE & Elise Pelvic Floor Exercisers:

1. Choose A Program: For both devices, once the probe is inserted, simply choose the program that fits you. Use the buttons to find a comfortable milliamperage. It will start to tingle, and you’ll start to feel the contractions. When you feel the contraction, if you want to go up a little bit more, you can by pressing the up arrow. You shouldn’t feel any pain, but you should feel the contraction.

2. Relax: You will notice a little countdown timer. It will count backwards from 20 because you should sit for 20 minutes. We recommend 20 minutes a day about 3-4 times per week. When the 20 minutes are up, simply turn off the machine, remove the probe and wash it with a gentle wipe or warm soapy water, ready for the next use. With regular use, you should feel a difference in about 6 weeks. Some people feel a difference sooner, but for most people it takes about 6 weeks to really have a noticeable difference in your leakage. If your muscles are weak, it can take a bit longer.

3. Alternate Probe Options: If you are a man and maybe have post-prostatectomy and incontinence, you can use an anal probe which is inserted into your anus. The anal probe works in the exact same way as the vaginal device. You simply insert the probe, plug in the machine, and you can use the mixed program to strengthen your pelvic floor.

The Perfect PFE and Elise devices are both approved by Health Canada. They are safe and recommended by doctors. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Mother’s Choice Products and we’d be happy to help you find a device that fits your needs.
