Why should I use TENS for my labour?

Maternity TENS machines have an excellent reputation as one of the safest, most effective forms of modern pain control available to women during childbirth. Midwives recommend MamaTENS as the machines are safe to use and enable mothers to remain mobile and upright during labour; aiding the descent and dilation whilst providing a more natural, drug-free form of pain relief.
Four electrode pads are placed onto the back; 2 just below the bra line and 2 on the lower back. These electrode pads omit small electrical impulses along the spine, blocking pain signals sent to the brain during labour.

How does it work?

There are 3 programs to make it easy:
Program A for early labour – use as soon as you feel regular contractions, but ONLY after 37 weeks.
Mode A1 is for use between contractions and mode A2 is for use during contractions. You can switch between the two modes at any time by pressing the BOOST button when you have a contraction. Use program A as long as you are getting relief.
Program B as your labour progresses – use this program when your contractions intensify and become more frequent. The intensity will automatically be cut in half. Push the up arrow until you reach a comfortable setting. You will feel that the stimulation in the higher set of pads CH1 (left channel) which have been placed just below your bra line is stronger than the lower set of pads CH2 (right channel) at the bottom of your back – this is intentional. As the contractions become more intense and closer together, increase the intensity. There are 2 modes here as well, B1 and then B2 for the Boost during contractions.
Program C – If you find programs A and B do not meet your needs for pain relief there is a third program C, which provides a higher level of pain relief. To avoid discomfort with the change in program, the set intensity will drop by half. This program has 60 steps of intensity. Press and release the ▲ button until you reach a comfortable intensity setting. The boost button works differently in this program, it is an active ramp program which means while you are pushing the boost button, the intensity is going higher.

What is the difference between the Perfect Mama and Perfect Mama+?

The devices are very similar. The programs used for labour are the same. The Perfect Mama+ has an optional labour log and contraction timer, and comes with a set of breast pads. The devices both use AA batteries and the same back pads.

How long can I use the TENS machine for?

You can use it for as long as you need. TENS can be used for as long as it is necessary. Continuous treatment is fine, but, except during labour, the electrode pads should be repositioned regularly (about every 12 hours) to allow the skin to be exposed to the air. You can use the machine during the post partum period as well to help with the healing process from a C -section or a vaginal birth to manage the pain. You can also use with breast pads to help initiate lactation. These pads come with the perfect Mama+ or can be purchased as an optional accessory with the MamaTens.

How is a Maternity TENS different to a regular TENS machine?

Our Maternity TENS units still use TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) to relieve pain by helping the body to release natural painkillers (called endorphins), and by blocking pain signals to the brain.
However, unlike general TENS machines, our Maternity TENS machines feature pre-set programs which are specifically designed for each stage of labour to help relieve pain, as well as a program which when used in conjunction with our breast pads, can encourage and maintain milk production.
Our devices also offers a boost button which allows users to rapidly increase the intensity to provide additional pain relief during contractions, and the Perfect Mama+ has an additional contraction timer to track your progress, and labour log to track the total time in labour.

Why can’t I use TENS before 37 weeks into my pregnancy?

The risks to unborn babies and to foetal development when using TENS before 37 weeks into pregnancy are unknown, therefore we do not recommend the use of a TENS machine before you reach this stage of pregnancy.
After 37 weeks into your pregnancy, you can safely use TENS to help provide relief from backache, and for a drug-free alternative form of pain relief during your labour.
Do not use on the abdomen in the later stages of pregnancy. Stop using immediately if you experience unexpected contractions.

How do I use my Breast Pads?

Program A1 stimulation can be used with the breast electrode pads (E-CMR60130) to help initiate lactation. You will need to purchase the L-CPT lead wires to attach them to your machine
if you have a Perfect Mama Tens machine. They are included with the Perfect Mama+ machine.

What is the Contraction timer?

Between the contractions, the screen will automatically display the duration of the last contraction and the interval between the last two contractions. Duration Shows the length in seconds of the last contraction. The timer starts when you press the BOOST button to start the constant mode (A Boost or B Boost) and stops when you press it again to return to burst mode (A or B). In program C, the timer starts when you press and hold the BOOST button and stops when the unit returns to the intensity selected initially. The unit continues to show the time until the start of your next contraction. Interval Shows the length of time between the start of the previous contraction and the start of the next contraction).
You can turn this off if you don’t want to see these intervals.

Breast pumps and TensCare Devices are considered Class II medical devices and are non-returnable unless they are unopened and the safety seal is intact. Each pump and device comes with a two year warranty, if you are having any issues please contact us for troubleshooting and potential replacement.
